Cap'n Rons blog - April

Hi guys,

After what seemed a very quiet March with the weather not being conducive to getting out and about on the golf course the season certainly seemed to get of with a bang.

But first a brief recap;

In February we held our 2nd (and probably now annual) Seniors dinner. With over 50 guests attending this made for a very enjoyable evening as you can probably tell from the photographs that were on our noticeboard. If anyone wants copies then please let me know.

The February and March monthly Stablefords were a bit mixed; February's being cancelled as the pin positions were changed halfway through and the March event was played on winter greens.

Towards the end of March we held a Canadian Foursomes with the ladies, deliberately splitting regular pairs (though as Carol Walker said to me "thanks for splitting me and Bill, but did you have to put us in the same four ball?"). This seemed to go off well and we have many requests to do something similar towards the end of the season.

Shirts, our new navy blue shirts have arrived - I will get them to you as soon as I see you down at the club. For those who haven't yet paid the cost is £15. Overall we placed an order for 34, very well done everyone.

As we come into the membership renewal period, it's with a touch of sadness that we say goodbye to Frank Mills, he's been a stalwart for many years and we wish him well at Avro. I'm not yet uptodate on any other changes.

Come April, the first bit of good weather and the course is very slowly getting back into condition. The Masters, and particularly Jordan Spieth's performance has certainly fired everyone up.

Our first match was against Birchall at home, I gather a bit of a struggle as we lost 6 1/2 to 1 1/2.

A couple of days later we played Buxton; many members were immediately in touch saying how well the day had gone and how well they had been treated both on the course and in the bar. As Mike C said: -

Just to report we WON 5 - 3 today.

Tight matches with 3 wins, 4 halves and 1 loss.

Course in good condition, greens fast and a carvery meal.

This has been a good addition to our list and I am sure all those today would agree.

With both myself and Roger B being unavailable thanks to Mike C for covering for us at such short notice.

Last Saturday the club staged the Stan Harrison trophy for those 55 or over. I was surprised to see the overall entry was only 30, disappointing that only 4 of us were from the 'Seniors' cohort ( I would have expected many, many more). However, I am pleased to say that I came away with the trophy, so I certainly found it an enjoyable day (made more so for me because we played in 3 balls and got round in just less than 4hrs)

Looking forward to the weeks ahead:

On Tuesday 21st April we are at home to Manor. This will be a 7 pair match with the first pair teeing off at 1000hrs. Thanks to those who have put up with our last minute rejigging, you know who you are - thanks again.

On Thursday 23rd April we have our monthly Captains Stableford. With no lift and place this will be our first opportunity to really test ourselves against the course this year. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible coming along for the day. Draw at 0800hrs as usual.

We have two matches coming up, both at Westwood, Shrigley Hall on 28th April and Greenway Hall on 5th May. We are struggling to find 16 fit players, if you can make yourself available can you please add your name to the list or give me a ring on 01260 222875.

Looking further into the future may I remind you of a few dates.

On Friday July 3rd Captain John Blurton is holding his 'Away Day' at Northenden, nr Manchester. All are welcome and I know John still has a few places left - if interested please speak with John directly.

On Tuesday July 7th we have our Senior Captains 'Away Day' at Branston, nr Burton. This promises to be a fine day, starting with their infamous breakfast baguette (you'll find it will take you a good hour to eat it) . The course has a slightly American feel about it with lots of water (the River Trent runs along one course boundary); A course that sets itself up to tempt you, but also one that can be managed. Full details are now on the notice board.

On August 20th we will be holding our local away day with the ladies at Cavendish, Buxton. Details will be posted in the coming weeks.

And finally, you may have notice how bare and bedraggled the river banks are; this is how the flowering annual Himalyan Balsam leaves them during the winter. Over the next few weeks you will start seeing this weed sprout. The Churnet Valley Living Landscape Project are currently planning their Balsam Bash programme for the last week of June / first week of July. I'll be looking to get as much involvement from both the club and membership as I can to help control this pest during these weeks. If you would consider lending a hand then you will be more than welcome.

See you soon,

Ron
